Avec Community Action is a nonprofit serving families and communities across Aroostook, Washington and Hancock counties in Maine. For decades, we’ve helped people meet challenges and reach their goals, with services ranging from heating and energy assistance to early childhood education, housing supports, wellness education, health, jobs and support for older adults. Our name means with, and that’s how we work: alongside the people we serve, not above them. We welcome everyone without judgment, connect them to the right resources and stay with them for the long haul. Whatever you’re facing, Avec is your neighbor, ready to help you find a way forward.
For decades we were ACAP, Aroostook County Action Program. The name said where we worked and what we did, and for a long time it fit. Just over a year ago, things changed. When longtime services in Washington and Hancock counties were at risk we partnered so that families there wouldn’t be left without help, and our reach grew. A name rooted in one county could no longer hold all the places we now call home.
